Be a Part of Mexico 2019
The 14th Pan American Maccabi Games will be held in Mexico City in July 2019. These Games offer athletes the opportunity to compete on the international stage in Junior, Open and Masters Divisions. With around 3000 athletes expected to attend from around the world, this is your chance to be part of Team AUS – either as competitor or supporter. Rivalry between countries is always intense, but the Pan Ams provides a slightly more relaxed environment, with Team AUS accommodated together for the entire games.
Head of Delegation, Sam Gamsu is hoping at least 120 athletes and officials will don the Green & Gold across; Swimming, Basketball, Soccer, Beach Volleyball, Tennis, Triathlon, Futsal, Golf, and more.
To get a feel for what it’s like attending here are some insights from Maccabi Tennis legend, Lauren Ehrlich, President of Maccabi NSW and poised to attend her 3rd Pan Ams.
Which Games have you attended?
2011 Sao Paulo, Brazil – Tennis Manager and Player
2015 Santiago, Chile – Head of Delegation
And looking forward to attending the 14th Pan Ams next year as Tennis Manager and Player.
What about medals?
In 2011, my husband and I won Bronze in mixed doubles tennis…. My son Noah also competed as a 12-year-old winning Bronze. The tennis team of 4 players scooped the pool with Gold in the open doubles and a total of 8 medals.
In 2015, being part of the team where all AUS athletes from all sports won a medal was very exciting!
For those not sure whether this is for them, or thinking that they’ve been to a Maccabiah so don’t need this experience, what would you tell them?
The Pan Ams offers a unique opportunity with athletes competing centrally at fantastic community facilities. It means we can directly support our fellow team members sharing and celebrating each other’s achievements. Being accommodated together allows families to be a true part of the experience, either as fellow athletes or supporters.
The South Americans are terrific hosts, and this is a wonderful opportunity to learn about their culture – there is no shortage of dancing and festivities.
Got your bags packed? Well there’s a few more things you need to know first,
