Football: Seniors bounce back!

After one of the worst weekends on record, the Club has bounced back with some good results under trying circumstances over the weekend. With all teams suffering due to mid-week matches/injuries/covid or the flu, and if not those issues we have so many players travelling over the next month things are only going to get harder. It’s difficult to even field a side at the moment for most teams.

Our Division 1 Saturday Team had a 1-1 draw against Pagewood. The opposition scored their own goal and just as it looked like we would take the points the referee gave a dubious penalty with minutes left. Steve Filler who had done well in goals after subbing for Max Nightingale who was injured in the first half, couldn’t stop the penalty. Our Saturday Division 2 side played twice during the week with one win and one draw. On Tuesday they defeated Maroubra United 4-3 after being down 0-1, the up 2-1 then down 2 – 3 and eventually winning 4-3 in an absolute thriller. Goals were scored by Mark Filler 1, Jordan Besser 1 and Solly Rachamim 2. They backed up Saturday with a 1-1 draw against Glebe – conceding the equalizer late in the game and with several players carrying injuries or sickness into the match.

Our Over 45 side got back on track with a 2-0 win over South East Eagles with their main striker Terry Sperber finally returning from injury to score both goals. Our division 1 Sunday side had the only loss of the round losing 1 -0 to the top side but with only 11 players and carrying injuries as well they did fantastically to only go down by the 1 goal.

The biggest win of the week was our Division 3 sides 4-3 win over Queens Park who was 4th a few points ahead of our team but the win has closed the gap. Daniel Nussbaum scored a hat trick while Leo Lipman scored the other one.
