Maccabi Western Australia along with the Holocaust Institute of WA has been very fortunate to receive State and Federal funding to build a purpose-built Holocaust Institute and community centre on Maccabi WA’s land in Yokine. Many years of organising by the Maccabi Property Advisory Committee came to fruition in 2020 – some good news in that trying year.  The project will include a purpose build state of the art Holocaust Institute which will continue to educate society about the Holocaust and the dangers of discrimination and intolerance. The programs are dedicated to combating racism, hatred and prejudice by fostering tolerance and understanding through education. The Institute offers a diverse and engaging range of educational programs and workshops for high school students as well as professional training for a variety of industries. Programs and workshops educate and promote awareness on the lessons of the Holocaust, its history and relevance today. The new centre will  be called the JHUB Western Australia Maccabi Community Centre. Our Home of Jewish Heritage | Culture|Education|Sport & Wellbeing. Included in the JHUB will be a lecture theatre, large function room, community and charity offices, classrooms and open areas for the youth groups to hold meetings, health and wellness areas for unstructured sport such as yoga, pilates & qi gong, meeting rooms for seniors, bridge, mahjong, and many more community activities.  The building will open out to manicured gardens that overlook the Maccabi playing fields.

The plans have been beautifully designed along with community consultation by David Karotkin at Carabiner Architects and have been submitted to the City of Stirling. The project is run by the Maccabi Asset Management committee under the expert guidance of  Project Manager Jonathon Silbert, along with Tony Tate, Justine Sharbanee ( current President of  Maccabi WA), and Jamie Ryvchin (current Treasurer of Maccabi WA). Demolition of the old building will be in the next  few months and we expect the building to be completed within 18 months – 2 years.

This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the Perth community, and we must also make significant contributions to the funds through an appeal and donations.
