Family connection at worlds

FOUR Aussie Jewish players, including father and son Tony and Marc Fridman, competed in last week’s 2023 Men’s World Snooker Federation
and Women’s Asia-Pacific Championships, at the Mounties Club in Sydney. For 66-year-old Tony Fridman (pictured), it was his world championship debut. He topped his group with two wins and a loss, reaching as far as the round of 64, which he lost to New Zealander Daniell Haenga. His 21-year-old son Marc – who made the round of 16 at the 2019 U21 Snooker World Championships – narrowly missed the knockout stage, posting one win and two close losses. Afterwards, he was named in the Australian squad for the 2023 Oceania Championships. Robbie Foldvari – a Maccabi Victoria Hall of Fame member – topped his group with two wins and two losses, but was defeated in the knockout stage by Hong Kong’s Fung Kwok Wai. And 14-year-old Mia Newman – who won the 2022 U18 girls’ Victoria state championship – was a quarter-finalist in the U21 women’s competition, and had one win and two losses in the open women’s.
