Young Luca lifts national trophies
HE is only 10, and was entering his first elite level national tournament, but northern Sydney’s Luca Meyerson didn’t let that faze him when competing at last weekend’s 2023 Kempo Gembu Ryu All Australian Karate Championships in Sydney. Meyerson, who trains twice per week at his local Kempo Genbu Ryu dojo, came first in his division on points for both sparring and full contact. He also came second in Kata and freestyle sparring. His proud mum, Georgia, said karate has become a pivotal part of Luca’s life, teaching him discipline and respect, while fostering new friendships, plus, “It runs in our family. “My father, Paul Hotz, is a 5th Dan black belt with 45 years of experience, who continues to train in budo, and teach at a Kempo Ryu dojo,” she said. “My husband and younger son have recently joined [that dojo] too, so it has certainly become a family affair.”
