FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP Maccabi Mums’ big moment
MACCABI FC Caulfield’s inspirational mothers team, the Mummy Bees, may be tempted to rename themselves the Macctildas … at least for the next six weeks. The team enjoyed the thrill of playing a five-on-five match in front of 55,000 Matildas fans at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne last Friday night, during the half-time break in the FIFA Women’s World Cup warm-up match between Australia and France. They were selected by Football Victoria (FV) for the big occasion as a reward for making so much progress in their first season, within their club, district and association, as part of FV’s Game Changer Program. Mummy Bees player Emily Gian was impressed, looking at the surrounding crowd, how many young fans the Matildas had, especially girls. “Female representation in sport is so important, and so it is for our club … After all, you cannot be what you cannot see,” she said. Team coach Sarah Foxman Favaloro said to briefly share the field with the Matildas, after running through the players’ tunnel onto the field, “was an exhilarating experience, but an equally great honour”. The Matildas are due to play Ireland in their World Cup opener tonight (Thursday) from 8pm at Sydney’s Accor Stadium
