Australian Maccabi Jewish Snowsports Championship
On Monday, 30 July, Mt Buller hosted the Australian Maccabi Jewish Snowsports Championship. Originally slated to take place on the Skyline race track, challenging snow conditions necessitated a change to the steeper Summit race track. The day was marked by mild temperatures, foggy conditions, and soft snow.
Key Stats:
- Participants: 74
- Age Groups: 6
- Race Tracks: Skyline (intended), Summit (actual)
The races were closely contested. An exciting presentation capped off the event at the Ajax Ski Club that Monday afternoon.
School Participation:
Prominent Jewish schools like Mount Scopus, King David, Yavneh, and Bialik were represented. Additionally, many participants hailed from non-Jewish institutions. The standout performances were by Sarah and Henry Orner, siblings who clocked the fastest times for female and male skiers across all divisions.
Community and Socials:
Beyond the competitive races, the championship was also an occasion to bring the community together. Young participants had a blast at the Mt Buller AirZone on Sunday evening. The adults weren’t left out, enjoying a cocktail party at the Ajax Ski Club. The event wrapped up with award presentations at the Ajax Ski Lodge on Monday evening, introducing a special accolade this year – The Debbie Grace Memorial Award. Celebrating the memory of skiing stalwart Debbie Grace, this award commended the female skier showing the most improvement between her two runs. The honour went to Georgie Jolson.
Acknowledgements:
Ajax Ski Club took the reins in organizing the championship, with operational support from Auscamp. A hearty thanks is due to Michelle Coppel from Michael Coppel Presents, the primary sponsor this year. Gratitude is also extended to Natalie & David Cooper for backing the participation awards.
In conclusion, while nature threw a curveball with the snow conditions, the spirit of competition and community was undeterred, making the Australian Maccabi Jewish Snowsports Championship a memorable event for all involved.
