Silver Streak: Montag’s Milestone in Budapest!
The Australian sporting community is beaming with pride, and so are we at Maccabi Victoria, as we celebrate Jemima Montag’s spectacular silver medal win in the 20Km race walk event at the World Championship held in Budapest. The news isn’t just about the silver; it’s about shattering records, setting new standards, and etching her name as one of Australia’s all-time greats.
Her sensational performance, clocking in at 1:27:16, was not just a personal best for Jemima but also set a new Australian record! With this achievement, she has seamlessly entered the elite list of Australia’s greatest ever race walkers. Additionally, her standing as likely the highest-ranked Track (Road) & Field athlete in Australia today, solidifies her prowess on the global stage.
Among the spirited supporters were some Maccabi stalwarts who passionately cheered for Jemima. Present at the event were Jemima’s mother Amanda, father Ray, sister Piper, Partner Dan, Yvette and Len Bogatin (our very own Maccabi Athletics president), and Harry Procell from Maccabi Australia.
But just how great was Jemima’s record time? To offer a slice of perspective, her average speed was 4 minutes and 21 seconds per kilometre. For our running enthusiasts, that’s akin to completing a half marathon in just 92 minutes! What’s even more astounding is that she achieved this while walking. Her strategy, technique, and execution were flawless – a testament to her immense hard work, dedication, and preparation leading up to the race.
For those who’d like to dive deeper:
- There’s a great interview with Jemima ahead of her race available here.
- The Age has penned a heartfelt article reflecting on Jemima’s family history and the significance of her victory, which you can read here.
From all of us at Maccabi Victoria, congratulations to Jemima Montag on this outstanding achievement. Your triumph isn’t just a win for you, but a win for all of Australia and an inspiration for every budding athlete.
