Celebrating 2023 Swimming Successes

Honorary Life Membership Awards – 2023 awardees left to right: Max Michael, Michael Carp, Mark Roseman, Barry Carp, and Roelof Vogel (President, Maccabi Ajax Swimming)

A Milestone Event

On Sunday, 27th August, the Maccabi AJAX Swimming Club and Maccabi Aquatics achieved a significant milestone, hosting their inaugural Annual Awards Night. Attended by 80 keen club members and their families, the event wasn’t just a celebration of the season gone by, but also a promising look at the milestones that surely lie ahead.

Stepping Up The Game

Ever since the formation of Maccabi Aquatics 18 months ago, the club has put itself firmly on the map in regional and state swimming meets. Special kudos goes to Guy Eylon, the outgoing Head Coach, whose relentless efforts over the past year have helped the club field a competitive junior squad.

The club is in a period of significant growth, boasting an impressive 120 junior swimmers spread across seven different development squads. Roelof Vogel, the club President, took the opportunity to warmly welcome the incoming Head Coach, Adrian Hepfer, and wished her all the best for the new season.

Remembering a Legend: The Nachum Buch Tribute

One of the most touching moments of the night was a heartfelt tribute to the late Nachum Buch. Coaching at Mount Scopus College from 1980 to 1994 and at the Alma Road pool, Nachum left an indelible mark on the club. His former swimmers, Barry Carp and Michael Carp, captivated the audience with stories of their time under his mentorship. The emotional weight of the tribute was palpable as Nachum’s relatives—Edna, Jenny, Ron, and Simon—stepped up to present the ‘Nachum Buch Trophy for Best Performance of the Year’ to Peri Afranco.

Honouring Our Own: Bestowing Honorary Life Memberships

An extraordinary part of the evening was the conferring of Honorary Life Memberships. This rare honour is reserved for club members who have gone above and beyond in their roles, be it as a swimmer, coach, administrator, official or supporter. The recipients this year were Barry Carp, Michael Carp, Mark Roseman, and Max Michael. The last time the club had bestowed this honour was eight years ago, making the occasion all the more special.

Looking Ahead

With awards handed out and tributes given, the night clearly showcased that Maccabi AJAX Swimming Club and Maccabi Aquatics are organisations poised for greatness, replete with talent, ambition, and a strong sense of community.

As we wrap up this exceptional night and look towards a new season, there’s no doubt the next Annual Awards Night will have even more accomplishments to celebrate.

Congratulations to all the awardees, and best of luck for the upcoming season!
