Maccabi Victoria Celebrates Community Spirit and Achievement at AGM

As we reflect on the milestones and memories of the past year, there’s a lot to be thankful for and celebrate at Maccabi Victoria. Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Wednesday, 17th November, was not just a meeting—it was a celebration of community spirit, sporting achievements, and the incredible dedication of our volunteers.

The evening began with a deeply moving prayer for Israel, reminding us of the strong bonds of solidarity we share with our global community. This set the tone for an evening filled with unity and togetherness.

2023 has been an extraordinary year for us. We’ve seen record levels of participation across our clubs, a testament to the thriving programs and the unwavering spirit of our athletes and members. Our Co-Presidents, Dean Mohr and Sharon Roseman, shared an insightful report highlighting major developments, including the successful Junior Carnival, the expansion of our All Abilities Program, and the launch of a centralised service model to support our clubs more effectively.

In his speech, Dean Mohr encapsulated the sentiment of the evening, saying: ‘As Co-Presidents, we have seen firsthand the incredible impact of these initiatives. We are immensely proud of what Maccabi Victoria has accomplished this year. Our clubs, athletes, and volunteers have shown remarkable resilience and dedication, embodying the true spirit of Maccabi’.

The AGM was also a moment to honour those who’ve made significant contributions to our community through sport. We presented the Presidents’ Award to Paul Fleiszig for his exemplary leadership in the Maccabi Ajax Ski Club and Water Polo Club. Darren Krawitz received The Lenny Bogatin Award for his service to the Maccabi Hockey Club, and Justin Fulop was recognised with The Jacquie Lerner Maccabi Next Gen Volunteer Award for revitalising the Maccabi Squash Club.

The highlight of the evening was awarding Life Membership to Brian Swersky, our immediate past President. His dedication and contributions, particularly in developing key initiatives like the Member Protection Policies and the COVID/Hardship Relief fund, have left an indelible mark on Maccabi Victoria.

MP David Southwick joined the event, delivering a reassuring speech about the importance of continuing to offer sporting opportunities to the community. His words highlighted Maccabi Victoria’s role in bringing the community together and strengthening ties during challenging times, showcasing the organisation as a beacon of hope and joy.

As we look to the future, the focus remains on strengthening club participation, ensuring athlete safety and wellbeing, and supporting the Jewish community through sport. The organisation extends its heartfelt gratitude to its sponsors and community partners for their ongoing support. Special thanks were also extended to Gary Peer and Associates for providing their wonderful venue, Co-Presidents Sharon Roseman and Dean Mohr, Board Chairman Simon Szwarc, honorary solicitor Simon Abraham, and the dedicated office team for their unwavering support.
