JUNIORS

AJAX Junior Footy Club’s 2024 South Metro Junior Football League season kicked off in earnest last Sunday morning, featuring a club record 679 registered players.

They were spread across 29 teams – up from 27 last year – including boys/ mixed teams and three girls-only sides.

Among the biggest winners in round one were the AJAX U15 boys’ Stars (pictured), who defeated the Caulfield Bears 19.8 (122) to 6.1 (37).

There are a record 65 coaches now at the club, plus dozens of committed and passionate volunteers, putting their hand up to assist on game days and training afternoons.

Club president James Davis said the club has grown by 60 per cent in the past decade in player and team numbers.

The club was named the Maccabi Victoria Club of the Year on April 14 and even received a hearty mazal tov for that in a message from Harry Sheezel.

“We would love to see as many members of the community down at Princes Park each Sunday, as the kids run out for the red, white and black,” Davis said.

SENIORS

The VAFA footy season began on a high last Saturday for AJAX’s Premier C men’s team, under new head coach Wayne Oswald and experienced captain Nick Lewis, when they beat Marcellin by 63 away from home. In a best-on-ground performance, Richie Simon booted eight goals, Jordan Cohen three and Toby Sheezel two. They’ll host Old Carey at Princes Park at 2pm this Saturday. The AJAX reserves thrashed Marcellin 105-36, the 2023 ‘Saturday’ thirds division 4 premiers – promoted up a division – outlasted Marcellin 79-35 and the AJAX ‘Sunday’ thirds division 2 side enjoyed a 94-42 win over Beaumaris, with Saul Alford scoring four goals. AJAX’s 2023 women’s premiership-winning team has a new look, merging with Old Camberwell to form a team in higher division 1. They had a 14-72 first up loss to Old Haileybury. And the club’s All Stars all-abilities side had an exciting 35-all draw with Eltham.
