Outstanding Maccabi Junior Sportsman & Outstanding Jewish Junior Sportsman – Marc Fridman

Marc has succeeded in many ways in 2017 and his hard work and determination prevailed as his stepping stones to his future successes. Along with 3-4 hours daily practice, playing state pennant competition 2 nights a week, coaching twice a week and of course tournaments locally & interstate, in his schoolwork he completed year 10 with above average results(beyond level 10) in maths, economics, business, creative thinking. In the top 20%. At State Level: Feb. Selected to Vic state team V Tas in Tasmania annual shield match (the only Vic junior selected). June. Winner Vic u18 state title /snooker. June. Outstanding Maccabi Junior Sportswoman – Ashley Weill

Ashley is an enthusiastic, hardworking and very committed swimmer. Ashley currently swim for the Northcote Swim club and previously was a member of the Ivanhoe swimming club. She is very dedicated to swimming and has 20 weekly hours of training in the pool. Ashley represented her club in State and National Short and long course swimming competition and has medaled in VIC state championship. Ashley also proudly represented Australia in the 2017 Maccabiah Games and won seven individual and team Silver and Bronze medals across multiple swimming events, including a silver medal in the open water swim. Ashley is also the 2017 Victoria State Junior Champion in 5km Open water swim. Domestic Level: Yarra Valley Grammar Swimming Colours – service to school excellence award. Outstanding Maccabi Sportsman & Outstanding Jewish Sportsman- Barak Mizrachi

Barak is 29 yo table tennis player who has competed at the 2016 Paralympic Games and is due to compete at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. He has also competed at the 2013 Summer Universiade and at 4 Maccabiah Games. State Level: Victorian Para Champion (Class 6-10). National Level: Australian Para Runner Up (class 8) and Bronze Medalist (Open Standing). International Level: Qualified for the 2018 Commonwealth Games (Para Class 6-10) World Para Team Championships (Class 8) – 11th Placing Oceania Para Championships (Class 8) – R/up Singles, Gold in Teams Thailand Para Open (Class 8) – Bronze Medalist Maccabiah Games (Class 6-10) – Bronze Medalist.

Outstanding Maccabi Sportswoman & Outstanding Jewish Sportswoman – Jemima Montag

Jemima has represented both Maccabi Athletics Club locally as well as Australia at the Maccabiah Games in 2017. She is training hard towards her first senior open national team in the 20km race walk. State Level: May 2017 First place, Women’s Victorian 15km road walk Championship, Middle Park February 2017 First Place, Women’s Under 20 5km track race walk Victorian Championships, Lakeside Stadium. National Level:17/12/17 Third place, 2017 20km women’s racewalk invitation (as part of the Australian 50km Road Walking Championships) 1:34:18. International Level: 17/12/17 Commonwealth Games qualifying time (1:36:18) for the open women’s 20km race walk.

Outstanding Maccabi Masters Sportsman – Zac Ashkanasy

Zac has been a long standing member of the Maccabi movement. He is an active member of the Maccabi Athletic Club and has previously sat on the Maccabi Victoria Board. As a Maccabi member, Zac has competed for over 35 years in competitive track and field competitions. In recent times, he has focused his effort on cross-country and road running and loving every moment. In 2017, Zac was fortunate to win all major road and cross country events for masters athletes for over 40 years of age in Victoria; eventually winning the overall Athletics Victoria masters competition. It covered races from 3k to 10k to a half marathon. His 10k and half marathon times were in the top 3 fastest times in Australia for anyone over 40 in 2017.Zac has been a long standing member of the Maccabi movement. 1.Josh Goldstat

Having taken 18 years off competing, Joshua was reacquainted with the sport triathlon in 2016. In the lead up to the 20th Maccabiah Games, Joshua has won several triathlons around the country in the 40-44 year old category. He qualified for 20th Maccabiah Games where he won 5 medals (4 gold and a bronze) competing in the MaccabiMan event.

Outstanding Maccabi Team of the Year – Joint Winners

1. Ajax Junior Football Club U11 Division 1 team

The U11’s represented the Club in the highest division. They played with great passion and team spirit the whole season. They were exceptionally well coached by Dean Mohr and Ben Rozenes. Whilst the team remained on top of the ladder for the entire season, they were pushed very hard in the finals series by two quality opponents. Grand final day in front of a very large crowd resulted in one of the most memorable games in the Club’s history. With scores level at full time, extra time was required and the boys kept their composure to record a very memorable win. Sport is about teamwork, pushing yourself as part of a collective, making new friends and life long memories. These boys did all of this and more….. Won the premiership in the 2017 SMJFL football season – U11s’ Division 1

2. Maccabi Hockey Club U 16 Team

After an unbeaten run through the season and semi final, the Maccabi u16 Hockey team took on KBH Brumbies in the Grand Final hoping to keep that record intact.With a full squad of 15 players coach Robbie Gore asked the team to apply full pressure from the opening whistle and try to establish their dominance early.The team responded with 2 goals in the first 10 minutes to take the initiative away from their opposition.Although dominating the rest of the half, no further score was added.At half time coach Gore praised their efforts but reminded the team that the job was only half done.The second half was a more even contest however a scrimmage in the KBH defensive circle saw a feeble prod towards goal by Aizenstros inexplicably let through by their goalie.That stung KBH into action and their tactics of leaving 2 forwards deep in their attack spread the game and allowed them into our circle where they earned a penalty corner and ultimately converted. This was the first goal Maccabi had conceded all season.This rattled Maccabi and the game went to another level of urgency as KBH strove to pull back one more goal however several terrific defensive efforts from Cal Segeal, Daniel Lindros and Joel Langer closed them down. Then when Ethan Light went on one of his weaving runs down the left baseline and found Page in front of goals to score his third, with a few minutes to go, the result was no longer in doubt.At the final whistle the players (and coach) were equally excited and relieved to have completed the season with an emphatic 4-1 victory which reflected Maccabi’s season as a whole.

Outstanding Maccabi Administrator – Clive Aaron

Clive received the Maccabi Administrator of the Year Award some two years ago. Since that time he has continued to develop the All Abilities programme for which he works tirelessly in so far as the swimming is concerned. He has also grown the Open Water Swimming to quadruple its size over the past two years. Where he has actually been of far greater value is in administrating and assisting with the 2017 Maccabiah. He became a life member of the Maccabi Ajax swimming club this year for the selfless and tireless work that he carries out for the club. Clive is a stalwart of our club and is a quiet achieving real asset for Maccabi.

Outstanding Jewish Junior Sportswoman – Alexandra Kiroi-Bogatyreva

Alexandra, an elite Rhythmic Gymnast had a very successful 2017, with 6 International Tournaments, including World Class events run by the International Gymnastics Federation. Despite Alexandra not making it to Maccabi Games, due to unforeseen circumstances that got the gymnastics team withdrawn from the competition, Alexandra’s 2017’s competition highlight was competing at one of the World’s most prestigious competitions Holon, Grand Prix, where she shared the competition floor with world’s top 5 gymnasts. She also competed in Greece, Singapore, twice in Italy and in Luxembourg. Her Australian Championship performance brought her 2 gold, one silver and 2 bronze medals. Alexandra, is a National Team Member and currently is one of 5 gymnasts in contention for a spot on Commonwealth Games Team. The selection will take place in Feb 18th 2018 . At domestic level, Prahran Invitational Tournament – clean sweep of 5 gold medals as Junior International. Acquired Beginner Judging Qualification. And judged her first 3 competitions. At State Level: 2017 Absolute Victorian State Champion in Junior International (5 gold medals) Absolute winner of two State Team Trials. 2017 NSW State Team Champion as a guest competitor, with 3 gold and 2 silver medals. At National Level: Runner Up (silver medal) at Australian Gymnastics Championship as Junior International, with total tally of 2 gold medals, 1 silver and 2 bronze. Australian Champion in one individual apparatus. National Team Member. Commonwealth Games shadow squad member. At International Level:Aphrodite Cup (Greece) 12th AA, qualifying in 1 final, 7th in one individual apparatus. Singapore Open (Singapore) 4th AA, one gold and one silver medals in individual apparatus competition. Gold medal for the Team. Holon Grand Prix (Israel) 12th AA, 6th team placing. Stelle di Natale (Italy) one silver and 3 bronze medals.

Outstanding Jewish Masters Sportsman – Joint Winners

1. Barry Carp

Barry was a national age swimmer when he retired from competitive swimming at age 15 Returning to the sport competitively after a 30 year hiatus, Barry found that his times had actually improved and that he was now the fastest 50 year old in Australia in many of his events. Domestic Level: Melbourne H2O Male 30yrs & Over Overall Club Champion. State Level: In his age category (50-54 years) Barry won multiple state titles, both long and short course, and broke 4 individual age State Records. National Level: At the 2017 Masters National Championships Barry won 5 gold medals from 5 individual swims in his Age (50-54 years), and he also broke 3 national age individual records in 2017. Nationals 50m freestyle 25.7sec 1st place Aus Record Nationals 100m freestyle 56.9 secs 1st place Aus Record Nationals 50m Butterfly – 27.5 secs 1st place – Aust Record. International Level: Barry competed at the 2017 FINA World Masters Championships in Budapest, competing in 5 events and his best placed finished was 3rd in the Men’s 50-54 100m Freestyle. He also broke national records in the 50m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke, with 4th& 5th placing. 50m Breaststroke 31.69 seconds – Aus Record 100m Breaststroke 1:11.23 sec – Aus Record Barry also represented Australia at the 2017 Maccabiah Games in the OPEN category where he made B-Finals in the 100m breaststroke.

Norman was selected in the Australian Over 60’s hockey team that will represent Australia in the World Cup in 2018. Michael Aronson has additional information.

Outstanding Jewish All Abilities Sportsperson – Ori Drabkin

Ori is 12 years old. When he was 3 he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. In 2015 he started competing in track and field and cross country as part of school sport. He’s won several medals at School Sport Australia track and field championship. In 2016 he joined Maccabi Athletics club where he’s been training since. He continued to have success in School sport in 2016 and in 2017, winning School Sport Victoria blue ribbon award in March 2017. He plans to continue and train and compete and aspires to represent Australia in the Paralympic games. Outstanding Maccabi Coach – Robbie Gore

Robbie has been a player, manager and coach over the last 40 years. In the last 6 years Robbie has been coaching the juniors and in 2017 coached the under 16’s to a premiership winning every game and only conceding one goal throughout the season.
