RUGBY- Maccabi show their potential
MACCABI continued their late season winning streak in the Jeffrey Cup, extending it to three matches on the trot last Saturday, with a comprehensive 28-14 away victory over Blacktown. It was the lowest number of points Maccabi have conceded in a match in 2023, while they earned a bonus competition point by scoring four tries, to Daniel Soroka, Jared Elbourne, Alon Kopelowitz and Fin Wright. Despite their latest win, the team remain in ninth spot on the 11-team ladder, due to losing the first eight rounds, including two games by forfeit. Coach Dean Friedlander told The AJN that after a rocky start, “there’s a really good vibe in the club again”. “The main factor for our winning streak would have to be getting many injured players back, which allowed us to recommence full contact training, which in turn, has improved our defence in matches. “Our squad this season also has half a dozen young guys – some in their teens – giving us an x-factor. “You’re always going to have some teething problems with that, but young guns like Josh Naiman, Alon Kopelowitz, Josh Segal and Jared Elbourne, are gaining plenty of experience.” Maccabi have a bye this weekend, before the last two regular rounds of the season.
