Maccabi Cup – Soccer Edition
Melbourne, 3rd September 2024 – The second edition of the Maccabi Cup took place at Caulfield Park, bringing together Year 8-9 students from Jewish schools for a festive soccer tournament. The competition featured separate boys’ and girls’ teams from Bialik College, Mount Scopus Memorial College, The King David School, Leibler Yavneh College, and for the first time, Yeshivah Beth Rivkah College – The Maccabi Cup is clearly gaining momentum!
As part of an ongoing interschool sports series, the event provided a unique opportunity for students to interact and compete with their peers from other schools, fostering not only a sense of unity but also a passion for sportsmanship and healthy competition. We are proud to say that although the games were fiercely contested, the spirit of fair-play shone through.
In the boys’ competition, Yeshivah College emerged as the champions. Going into the final round, Leibler Yavneh College needed a win to secure the top spot. Despite numerous attempts, Yavneh was held to a 0-0 draw by Yeshivah’s resolute defence, a result that saw Yeshivah win the boys’ competition by a mere one goal. The Yeshivah team celebrated their hard-earned victory with great enthusiasm.
The girls’ tournament was equally intense, with Beth Rivkah and Bialik College neck and neck heading into the final round. Both teams entered the last match with identical points, with Beth Rivkah holding a slight advantage in goal difference. Bialik secured a 3-0 win over Yavneh, but Beth Rivkah matched this with a 3-0 victory over Mount Scopus. This narrow margin allowed Beth Rivkah to clinch the title by just one goal, sealing their place as the champions.
Yeshivah-Beth Rivkah were awarded the overall Maccabi Cup for achieving the highest number of points across both boys’ and girls’ competitions, reflecting their strong efforts from start to finish.
“It was so special to see over 120 Jewish students taking to the soccer fields for the Maccabi Cup and a huge mazal tov to Yeshivah and Beth Rivkah on their win. We look forward to watching the program grow in 2025 to include more sports and more events, and to see if Yeshivah Beth Rivkah can defend their titles.” Said Dean Mohr, Co-President of Maccabi Victoria.
Maccabi Victoria extends its heartfelt thanks to Solomon Family Foundation and to all the students, school staff members and families who contributed to the event’s success. Maccabi Victoria remains dedicated to its mission of fostering community spirit and encouraging physical activity through sports.
