Championship Wins, PBs & Future Stars: A Huge Weekend for Maccabi Athletics
It was another action-packed weekend for Maccabi Athletic Club athletes and friends, with stellar performances across local, state, and national events.
Jemima Montag Makes It Six in a Row
Jemima Montag, for the sixth time in a row, won the Australian 20K Race Walk Championships held in Adelaide on Sunday. Jemima’s time of 1 hour, 27 minutes, and 47 seconds was a great start to the year in preparation for the World Championships, which will be held in Tokyo in September.
Julien Schulberg Dominates Victorian 3000m Title
Julien Schulberg won the 40-44-year-old Victorian 3000m title at Lakeside in a solid time of 9 minutes, 22.43 seconds — well ahead of the rest of the field.
Young Stars Shine at Caulfield Regionals
The next generation of athletes proved their talent at the Caulfield Little Athletics Regional Championships. Four of our club stars have qualified for the State Championships over the Labour Day weekend:
- Zach recorded the second-fastest 100m time for his age group.
- Sofia was the third-fastest in her 200m race.
- Allegra won the Under 9 70m race.
- Yuval placed third in both the 400m and 800m events.
PBs Galore at the Carman’s Fun Run
The Carman’s Fun Run was also held over the weekend, with many club athletes and families competing. The highlight was a huge PB in the half marathon by Ariel Golvan, who clocked 78 minutes and 37 seconds.
Club juniors also ran very well in the 10K race, including Alex and Georgia Gurvich, Zac Alter, Josh Stawski, and Benji Stiglitz.
It was great to see several sub-junior athletes running the 5K with their parents, including:
- Ruben and Kylie Schulberg
- Ben and Jason Blankfield
Maccabi Fun Runners Yehuda Gottleib, Joel Belleli, Danny Goldman, and Michael Abbo all took on the half marathon.
Also spotted was young Yeshiva student Eli Balbin (12-15 age group), who ran a very swift 10K in 38 minutes and 34 seconds.
Eyes on the Upcoming Victorian Championships
The Victorian Championships’ second weekend of competition will be held from the 21st to the 23rd of February. Thirteen-year-old Charlie Pack will be competing in the high jump and 800m, while Shanie Landen will once again be a medal chance in the women’s open 800m event.
