Sports Foundation
The strength of our community rests in the hands of our young people.
By bringing young people together in an atmosphere of health, activity and common interests, Maccabi Victoria helps to maintain a strong community and a strong sense of Jewish identity.
The impetus for the establishment of the Maccabi Victoria Sports Foundation was the stark reality that our member clubs have achieved what they have today on a ‘hand to mouth’ basis. Maccabi Victoria membership across all of our clubs has grown over recent years from 2,700 to over 4,200 today.
We are rich in sporting achievements and tradition but, sadly, this is not always matched by the quality of programs and infrastructure, which is essential to cater for the growth that is being experienced.
The establishment, in 2003, of the Maccabi Victoria Sports Foundation as the body to secure a strong financial basis to meet the infrastructure and program requirements of our community, to bring professional ‘know-how’ and to work with Maccabi clubs and community groups, is an important strategy to achieve this objective.
The vision of the Foundation is to support and develop:
Strong and growing clubs which keep our community connected and support excellence in team and individual performance
- A strong financial base to enable Maccabi Victoria and its affiliated clubs to grow and achieve their goals
- Well planned, high quality sports and social facilities for all Maccabi clubs and our community to share
- A healthy lifestyle program to promote activity and good nutrition for all Jewish children
- Strong clubs which develop important life skills and positive values

Our Projects and Programs
The Maccabi Victoria Coaching Development Program acknowledges the vital role that motivated and communicative coaches play in the development of our sportsmen and women.
Good coaching is both fundamental to club and individual achievements, and to the attainment of the highest standards of sporting excellence across all Maccabi Victoria clubs.
This Fund is specifically to enhance coaching within Maccabi clubs, and can be used for the general advancement of coaching, including coaching clinics, coaching seminars, sending coaches on certificated training courses, specialized coaching. Approved training for coaches through the respective sports organisation or through Victorian Institute of Sport. Other options for use of funds include:
- Coaching clinics, short term training camps.
- Bringing in short term, specialist coaching support for clubs.
- Coaches to attend seminars, conferences, or workshops.
- Coaching Aids in the form of special equipment.
Your donation to the Capital Fund will help support a co-ordinated coaching development program that will deliver tangible benefits to Maccabi Clubs and their members, as well as Jewish athletes in the wider community.
Since the 1920s, Carnivals have been the landmark event for Jewish athletes throughout Australia.
Junior Carnival brings together young people, from across Australia and New Zealand, in an atmosphere of sporting competition, social interaction, fun & leisure.
For some participants, it is their first introduction to a wider Jewish community, generating new friendships and pride in their Jewish identity.
Maccabi Victoria aims to give every eligible child the opportunity to participate in Junior Carnival.
We are grateful for the generous support of The George Castan Family Charitable Trust in supporting this Program.
Your donation will support young Jewish athletes to attend Carnival and share in a memorable experience.
This Fund, which has brought together various previous funding streams (including the Club Development Program), is primarily available each year a) as a result of direct support from donors; and b) as a result of the Annual Appeal, and creates a fund of approximately $15-20,000 for clubs per annum. These monies are available for:
- support for persons with a disability;
- emerging elite athletes;
- sporting equipment;
- fee subsidies for club affiliation fees;
- funds for special events and general sports development, as per the Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) guidelines.
Your donation to this Capital Fund will help support a significant support for athletes and clubs that will deliver tangible benefits to Maccabi Clubs and their members, as well as Jewish athletes in the wider community.
The Maccabi Victoria Board and Foundation are working with local council, schools and community organisations to identify and secure appropriate facilities for all our clubs. Facilities are urgently needed for AFL, football (soccer), hockey, and other sports, as well as a social facility for all clubs to utilise for meetings and social events.

Your gift to Maccabi will have a huge impact on the lives of many thousands of children and adults over many years – more impact than most of us achieve in a lifetime.
A gift will enable Maccabi to invest in health and well-being programs for children, to encourage healthy activity through sport and, most important of all, through sport to create strong friendships and relationships which in turn build community cohesion and connection, and the base for a strong Jewish future here in Melbourne.
Your generosity will be appropriately honoured and acknowledged by our community.

Maccabi Victoria is not just a sporting organisation.
Involvement in a Maccabi club raises awareness of one’s Jewish identity and our cultural tradition. Involvement in sport also creates social connections and teaches a sense of achievement so vital for people, young and old. Clubs also transmit positive values and codes of conduct and are a unique place for young people to learn important life skills such as working cooperatively as a team member, achieving common goals and performing under pressure – all skills they have to master as adults.
Please support Maccabi Victoria with a donation to enable more children and adults to stay linked to their heritage and learn life skills.
“There is a unique Jewish Culture in Maccabi that you don’t experience in any other club. You’re playing with lifelong friends and your best mates, who add another dimension to your sport.”
Jonathan Weinstock, Cricket Club.
Contribute to an organisation that has played a part in bringing our community together, keeping it healthy and influencing its future for over 80 years. Help ensure Maccabi continues to motivate and inspire children and is able to support some through family financial difficulties. Everyone should have the same opportunity to connect with our community, build friendships, and achieve excellence in sport.
Membership fees don’t cover all the costs of delivering high quality sporting activity to our young people.
By giving your support to Maccabi Victoria, you are playing a vital role in changing lives in our community. Your donation will work hard to keep our community healthy and active and bring together young and old, to mix, make friends and strengthen our community.
Funds raised support development of high quality facilities and healthy lifestyle programs as well as supporting club costs in specialist equipment, uniform support, coaching clinics, championships and disadvantaged access programs.
