Women win big in Easts district

DOUBLE Bay Club and Maccabi bowls members Barbara Shur and Barbara Shotland both qualified for last week’s 2023 Eastern Suburbs District ladies’ senior singles final. It was a closely contested decider, and fellow Double Bay and Maccabi member Leikie Becker was on the green too, as an official tasked with doing the markings. In a high-quality match played in very warm, sunny conditions, it was Shotland who came out on top, with a 25-22 win. The good results kept coming, with Double Bay’s squad of Iris Kampel, Grace Kady, Marna Morris, Barbara Shotland, Leikie Becker, Barbara Shur, Gail Black, and Lesley Judelman earning the 2023 Eastern Suburbs District ladies’ shield. Arlene Normand, Margo Michael, and Gail Black (who subbed for Rene Saidman) combined to win the 2023 Double Bay ladies’ drawn triples title. In Double Bay mid-week triples, the gold division winners were Jack Kampel, Iris Kampel, and Barbara Shotland, while the silver division winners were Michael Becker, Arnold Javen, and Gerald Raichman. Brandon Conway qualified for the final 16 bowlers in the zone 13 men’s senior singles competition. And at the Maccabi Lawn Bowls Guild’s AGM, Jacques Hasson was re-elected as president, and Julian Cass vice-president. Louis Platus (pictured) was named a life member, following his many years of outstanding service to the club. Alan Rosenberg and Shmuel Abrahams received certificates of appreciation.
