TENPIN BOWLING – Terrific scores at memorial tournament

IN a tournament on Monday night at Manhattan Superbowl, Maccabi NSW Tenpin Bowling Club continued the tradition of honouring the lives of longtime club members Greg Small and Yetty Bennett who – along with Elizabeth Sawicki and Warren Zines – tragically lost their lives in the 1997 Maccabiah Games bridge collapse disaster in Israel. The 2024 Greg Small-Yetty Bennett Memorial Tournament drew a full house of 73 bowlers, who played five games each. The players came from the club’s Monday night league and other tenpin leagues in Sydney, and included Maccabi NSW president Mandy Penkin and general manager Ori Danieli. Also present were members of the Small family – Suzanne, Rebecca and Josh. In the women’s competition, Maccabi bowler Nicky Green, with a 117 average, backed up her success in last year’s tournament by achieving a 145 average to win by 89 pins and defend her title. Putting in a tremendous effort while juggling a Maccabi board meeting in between frames, Penkin took out second place with an impressive 112 average. The men’s scratch winner was Herbert Soegiprusetio, who achieved an outstanding average of 237 in his five games, which included scores of 258 and 248. Other highlights were Andrew Frawley just missing out on the

tournament-high game score with 267, with that honour going to Neil Mills who scored 268. In the men’s handicap division, Maximilien Alex earned top spot, by 56 pins. Included in his series was a brilliant 204 game score, which was 62 above his average. Runner-up was last year’s winner Darnley Vancuylenberg, who had a series average of 167, and scored 213 and 213 in his best games. The top score in the men’s handicap was 231 by Theo Milios who placed fourth. Club president Howard Silver thanked all the players and tournament director Ronnie Lang for their enthusiastic participation in making the memorial tournament a successful and exciting night of tenpin bowling.
