Weightlifting Duo Lift at Nationals

Jewish Victorians Layla Bloom (pictured), 18, and Ashley Kolomoisky, 17, competed well at last weekend’s Australian Weightlifting Senior Championships in Melbourne, and will both represent Australia in the Oceania Championships in Samoa in October.

At the nationals, Bloom won a silver medal in the women’s 71kg bodyweight division, despite being the second youngest entrant in the 10-strong field, lifting 76kg in the snatch and 106kg in the clean & jerk, for a total of 182kg. She was only beaten by 30-year- old Queenslander Olivia Kelly, whose total was 215kg.

That result earned Bloom a place in Australia’s squad for the Weightlifting Junior World Championships in Mexico in November, and cemented her junior female Australian ranking of second.

Kolomoisky, who last month won silver on debut at the Commonwealth Youth Weightlifting Championships in Delhi, was the youngest entrant.
