Junior Cricket’s Best Season Yet?

It was a fantastic final round of the ISEC regular season for Maccabi-AJAX Junior Cricket Club (MAJCC), with three of its teams qualifying for the upcoming finals series.

In one of the most comprehensive victories in the history of the junior club, their U17 team snuck into fourth place ahead of East Malvern, on superior net run rate, after scoring at seven runs per over in a 187-run win over Mulgrave at Gary Smorgon Oval last Sunday.

The key to reaching 4/318 in their 45 overs were superb innings by Ari Fell (retired on 100 off 74 balls) and Aidan Sheffield (93 off 112 balls), while Ethan Sellyn (unbeaten on 45 off 26) and Gilad Lowinger (45 off 28) maintained the momentum. Mulgrave were all out for 131, with Lowinger, Noah Machet, Jacob Simmons and Noah Goldberg bagging two wickets each.

The MAJCC U15 Titans (3.129) finished on top of the Taylor Shield ladder with a 10-run win over the Balwyn Tigers (6/119) last Sunday. Captain Asher Kave made 51 runs off 53 balls, while the pick of their bowlers were Shalom Goldstein (2-16) and Dean Waters (2-25).

Both boys’ teams will play in semi-finals matches, to be played across the next two Sundays.

In the All Girls T20 season, MAJCC finished third on the U14B North ladder, with nine wins and three losses, and were due to play in a semi-final on February 28 against Mount Waverley. Bowler Aria Friedman starred in their most recent win, taking three wickets for two runs.

Although missing the finals the MAJCC U11 gold boys’ side posted a memorable 36-run victory last Sunday over Murrumbeena – who hadn’t lost a match all season.

Asher Lowinger was outstanding in the field, nailing two direct hit run outs and a superb diving catch, while bowler Velli Herbst took 4-22 and batter Jacob Katz was unbeaten on 17 off 17 balls. The club’s leading runscorers in the regular season, for all age groups, were Ari Fell (487), Gilad Lowinger (450), Asher Kave (400) and Frank Raleigh (339), while top wicket-takers were Raleigh (21), Herbst (19), Eden Levi (18) and Zac Rostkier (16).

Club president Darren Sacks said, “I am particularly pleased with the improvement that has been shown by all our teams.”
