World Cup and State Championship Success for Kerry Saloner -GKR Karate
Mazel tov to Kerry Saloner who followed up her recent GKR World Cup silver medal with NSW State Championship gold on 23 November. Both medals were achieved in the over-45 Women’s Kata Competition.
The GKR World Cup was held in September at Sydney Olympic Park and attracted 1440 competitors from Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. It gained the distinction of being the largest karate competition in the world.
Kerry’s World Cup silver medal on final’s day in front of a packed crowd was closely contested, with Kerry narrowly losing in a split decision.
Kerry also enjoyed notable success in the Open Team Kata competitions at both events. She led her team to a fourth-place finish at the World Cup, after a narrow two-three flag loss in the semi-final. At the State Championship her team were silver medallists. Outstanding achievements for Kerry in open – all ages – events. The silver medal was made all the more impressive by Kerry’s team executing a fifth dan kata performed for the first time in a team competition.
We at Maccabi NSW wish Kerry a “behatzlacha” for her forthcoming grading to second dan at the GKR state black belt gradings on 9 December.
