Why the Maccabi Athletic Club Is One to Watch
The Maccabi Athletic Club has seen one of the biggest growth spurts of any club in our network over the past few years. Membership has more than doubled — sitting above 120 this season, up from the three-year average prior — and it’s not just about numbers. It’s the structure, strategy, and consistency behind the scenes that’s made the difference.
They’ve built a strong culture from the ground up. The junior training program alone now sees more than 50 athletes attending weekly sessions. The club has also produced multiple state and national medallists in the past year. Most recently, Zac Ashkanasy broke the M50 1500m world record — a standout achievement in Masters athletics. And of course, we have to acknowledge Australian Olympic racewalker and bronze medallist Jemima Montag, who spent her formative years at the club and remains an active supporter and life member. These athletes, among others, came through the Maccabi ranks and continue to inspire the next generation.
The club doesn’t just focus on elite athletes. They’ve made space for both competitive and social members, and they’ve put real effort into building a strong community. Their program caters to juniors training for events like the MaccabiJunior Athletics Champs and open-age athletes chasing team success — including a cross-country premiership this season. But just as importantly, they’ve built a social side to the club: monthly social run groups for all ages, and events like a private screening of Jemima Montag’s Olympic race have helped bring people together off the track as well.
They’ve also made smart choices around leadership. A Youth Leadership Committee was launched to give junior athletes a voice and experience beyond training. Each member of the committee holds a clear portfolio — covering areas like coaching, competition management, school liaison, social events and marketing. It’s a system that gives aspiring leaders in the club ownership and real responsibility, and it’s already had a positive influence on how the club runs events and communicates.
The inaugural Maccabi Junior Athletics Championship Day was a standout — bringing over 100 young athletes together for competition and connection. But the Athletics Club hasn’t just stayed in its lane. In past footy off-seasons, they’ve run joint training programs with members of the AJAX Junior Football Club to help players maintain fitness and conditioning. It’s a strong example of collaboration between Maccabi clubs and one we’re really proud to highlight.
Looking ahead, the Athletics Club is well placed for growth. The foundation is there — in the planning, the people, and the programs. They’re focused on supporting their members across all levels and giving them meaningful ways to stay involved. Whether that’s through performance, leadership or simply showing up each week — it’s a model that’s working.
