The Maccabi Cup was held on Wednesday 3 September at Caulfield Park, with Years 8 and 9 students competing in a soccer tournament. Six schools took part: Beth Rivkah Ladies College, Bialik College, The King David School, Mount Scopus Memorial College, Leibler Yavneh College, and Yeshivah College.
The competition continues to give students the chance to test themselves on the field while connecting with peers across the community. The sportsmanship award went to Benny Segal of Yeshivah and Abi Terry of King David for their conduct and spirit of play.
The boys’ draw produced a gripping final between Yeshivah and Yavneh. Yeshivah entered with 7 points and Yavneh with 6, meaning Yavneh needed victory to take the title while a draw would have secured Yeshivah first place. Both sides created chances, but the result came in the final minutes when Yeshivah’s Tzvi Adelist struck a superb goal into the top corner. The finish secured victory and gave Yeshivah back-to-back championships.
In the girls’ competition, King David dominated the early rounds, collecting 10 points from three wins and a draw before their bye in the last round. Yavneh, sitting on 7 points, needed a three-goal win over Bialik to move ahead. Bialik, however, held firm and produced a 2–0 result. King David were crowned champions, a remarkable outcome with only nine players in the 11-a-side format.
Bialik won the overall Cup for the highest total points. A special thank you to the Solomon Family Foundation for their continued support in making the Maccabi Cup possible.
The Cup once again highlighted the energy, talent, and pride running through Jewish school sport.
