AVSL, cross country celebrations, Melbourne Marathon and growth for juniors
The AVSL season continued at Casey Fields on Saturday with Myer Vorchheimer contesting the shot put, triple jump and 200m events in fine fashion.
The next AVSL competition will be held in 3 weeks time as the Victorian All Schools Athletic Championships will be held over the next 2 weekends.
Some Maccabi athletes will be competing including 12 year old Sofia Sable in the 100m and 200m and 13 year old Charlie Pack in the high jump.
A number of our young athletes will also be competing in the School Sports Victoria Regional Track and Field championships including: Sofia and Allegra Sable, Yuval Berry, Asher Brown, Zak Sutton and Benji Borowski – we wish them all the best of competitions.
The Maccabi Run Club will be off and running again this Sunday 26th October – meet at Elwood pier by 7.40am at the latest. To register: Bit.ly/Maccabi-Run For further information please ring Jason Blankfield ph 0407 558 585.
In other news, the Maccabi Cross Country team enjoyed a celebratory dinner last Saturday night to toast their sensational XCR premiership. Go Maccabi!
We would be remiss to exclude some Melbourne Marathon news. Incredible results from the Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival held Sunday 12th October from club athletes:
- 22 year old athlete Noah Star set a club record in the marathon clocking 2 hours 39min 53 sec! A fantastic run.
- A number of other junior, open and masters athletes were outstanding including:
- Nick Hershan who placed 3rd overall in the 5K race in 14min 45sec
- Junior athletes Asher Brown in the 5K and Lenny Blustein in the 10K both finished top 10 in their age group (under 13)
- Club coaches Jarrod Zuchowski (74min 28sec) and Jake Surdut (98 min) both ran the half marathon
- Also running the half were Asher Grodski who ran a massive pb of 76min 42sec and club committee man Jason Blankfield (94m 47s)
- Tim Goodman ran the full marathon – despite just recovering from Covid, whilst junior athlete Matt Kaplan ran the 5K
- And I am sure their were many other club members and family who ran in this magnificent event.
Well over 80 Jewish athletes (that we know of) ran in the Festival and we noticed at least 8 of them went under the magic 3 hour barrier in the full marathon!
In terms of Club partnerships, Maccabi Athletic Club had more than 50 young athletes training on Sunday 12th October at Duncan Mackinnon Athletic track over 2 sessions – our usual 10am session and then our first 4pm session especially for AJAX junior footballers
Thanks to our growing coterie of club coaches including: Ilia, Adam, Jarrod, Haile, Ollie, Ben, Tamzyn and Jake!
Over 40 young athletes have signed up to the club for the term4 and AJAX running programs – a huge intake over the past 4 weeks.
